Honestly, Maui Mana Skincare came from a really personal place.
For a long time, I felt disconnected from the idea of "beauty" and the beauty industry as a whole. So much of it felt fake to me — overly polished, overly curated, constantly trying to convince people they weren't enough without buying something else. And underneath all of it, I felt like people were being sold products more than they were being given honesty.
That never sat right with me.
I didn't start this business because I had some perfect plan or because I thought I had everything figured out. I started it because I cared. About the ocean. About people. About creating something that actually felt genuine in a world that can feel really performative sometimes.
I was born and raised on Maui, and this island raised me in every sense of the word. The ocean has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. I spent over 15 years working out on the water as a first mate out of Māʻalaea, and being out there every day changes you. You learn respect. You learn humility. You learn how connected everything really is.

At the same time, life has not always been easy for me. Before this, I worked in mental health and social work. I spent years holding space for people during some of the hardest moments of their lives while quietly carrying a lot of my own struggles too. I know what burnout feels like. I know what anxiety feels like. I know what it feels like to pour everything into helping others while slowly losing parts of yourself in the process.
Somewhere along the way, creating skincare became grounding for me. It started small — just experimenting, researching ingredients for hours, learning everything I could, making products by hand at my kitchen table. And for the first time in a long time, I felt connected to something creative again. Something peaceful. Something meaningful.
The deeper I got into it, the more frustrated I became with how hard it was to find straightforward information in the skincare world. There's so much fear-based marketing, greenwashing, and half-truths that people are left overwhelmed and confused.
I didn't want Maui Mana to contribute to that. I wanted it to feel human. I wanted people to know there's a real person behind this brand — someone who genuinely cares about what goes on your skin and what ends up in our ocean. Someone who believes people deserve transparency, education, and honesty instead of marketing gimmicks.
That's why I share research and information openly. Not because I think I know everything, but because I think people deserve access to information so they can make informed choices for themselves.
Maui Mana is still growing, and honestly, so am I. Some days I still feel scared. Some days I question whether I'm doing enough or whether any of this will work long term. But I keep coming back to the same thing: this brand was never built just to sell products.
It was built from love.
For Maui.
For the ocean.
For community.
For healing.
And for creating something real in a world that often feels anything but real.
